Sports Markets Glossary
Definitions
Inning
An inning is one of the divisions of a cricket match during which one team takes its turn to bat.
Over
A bowler delivers the ball from his end of the pitch six times to the batsman at the opposite wicket. This group of six deliveries is called an "Over".
Boundary
The Perimeter of a cricket field, or the act of the batsman scoring a four or a six.
Duck
A score of 0.
Duckworth Lewis Method
Named after the two mathematicians, it's the system used to help decide one-day cricket matches in cases of weather disruptions in play. The target score in cricket matches without interruptions is the number of runs scored by the team that batted first plus one. When overs are lost, setting an adjusted target for the team batting second is not as simple as reducing the run target proportionally to the loss in overs, because a team with ten wickets in hand and 25 overs to bat can play more aggressively than if they had ten wickets and a full 50 overs, for example, and can consequently achieve a higher run rate. The DLS method is an attempt to set a statistically fair target for the second team's innings, which is the same difficulty as the original target. The basic principle is that each team in a limited-overs match has two resources available with which to score runs (overs to play and wickets remaining), and the target is adjusted proportionally to the change in the combination of these two resources. To calculate a target, the formula may simply be expressed thus: Team 2's par score = Team 1's score x (Team 2's resources/Team 1's resources).
Extras
Runs not scored by batsmen. An extra (sometimes called a sundry) is a run scored by, or awarded to, a batting team which is not credited to any individual batsman. They are the runs scored by methods other than striking the ball with the bat.
Leg-Before Wicket (LBW)
is one of the ways in which a batsman can be dismissed in the sport of cricket. Following an appeal by the fielding side, the umpire may rule a batter out lbw if the ball would have struck the wicket but was instead intercepted by any part of the batter's body (except the hand holding the bat.
Maiden
An over where no runs are scored by the bowler.
No-Ball
An illegitimate delivery, usually when the bowler has overstepped on the front crease.
Wide
A type of illegal delivery to a batter (the other type being a no-ball) that is judged by the umpire to be too wide or (in international cricket) too high to be hit by the batsman by means of a normal cricket shot. It is also a type of extra, being the run awarded to the batting team as a consequence of such an illegal delivery.
The regular time in football is 90 minutes long (2x45 minutes halves) plus the injury time. Only the regular time counts for our bet markets, unless otherwise stated.
